Newport Beach is in compliance with California recycling laws and works with the company CR&R to collect the trash and recyclables. All items placed in the trash can will be sorted at a facility, so it is not a requirement that residents sorted their waste into separate trash and recycling containers, but it is encouraged because it prevents contamination. If everyone in Newport Beach does their part it can make a world of difference.

4 Items You Cannot Recycle

Styrofoam -  Many restaurants are now switching from this outdated food to-go method, but if you do get a styrofoam box don't recycle it. The styofoam material absorbs dirt, food, and anything it comes in contact with and it's not possible to remove these contaminents making it a trash item.

Paint Cans - Although the actual paint can is recyclable itself, the paint inside is not. It's common for there to be excess paint left over after a paint job, but that paint cannot go in the recycle bin. The left over paint in a paint can be extremely toxic so it's important to carefully dispose of the paint, clean the paint can and then recycle it.

Plastic Bottle Caps - It seems very strange that you are allowed to recycle a plastic bottle and not it's cap, but unfortunately it's true. The plastic bottle is made out of a different kind of plastic than the bottle's cap. Plastic labled 1 - 7 are acceptable recyclable pastics, but bottle cap's are often trash items.

Used Paper Towels - Although paper towels have paper in their names, when they've been used they soak up whatever they've come in contact with. Their usually used to clean, so the mold, grease, chemicals etc. they soak up can contaminate an entire recycle bin. It's safest to toss used ones in the trash and place clean ones in the recycle bin.
