Decide Where To Grow Your Garden

Pick a place in your home where you have enough space, plenty of sunlight and consistent temperatures. Most herbs need to be planted in their own specific containers separate from other herbs so if space is limited, start by planting just a couple herbs. Setting your plants up by a heater or an A/C unit is not the ideal location. The kitchen is often an ideal location for an herb garden because of the amount of sun that usually comes through the windows. If you don't have room in your kitchen feel free to select a different place in your home. Luckily, the sun shines bright in California most days in the year, but if your garden area doesn't get at least 6 hours of sunlight each day, you can purchase an artificial light system that will work just like the sunshine.

Select Your Herbs

As you start to select the herbs you want to grow, think about the herbs you use the most currently. Do you often cook with basil, thyme, oregano, mint, chives etc.? For each herb, find out it's ideal growing condition and keep in mind you might be limited to specific herbs depending upon how much light the herbs need to flourish. Each herb will be most successful when it's grown in it's ideal environment. Pro Tip: Are you a coffee lover? After you make your morning cup of joe, save your used coffee grounds and add them to your plants' soil as a fertilizer to help improve the quality.
