With fall upon us, this is the time of year to prep your yard for the cooler temperatures. With the temperatures averaging in the low 60's Newport Beach rarely has to worry about freezing temps, but with lows hitting the 40 degree mark it's smart to be prepared. When the temperature lowers there's a lot going on below ground that we never see. Use this fall landscaping checklist and with a little extra work, you can make sure your trees, plants, and yard look fantastic and healthy all year round. Are you new to gardening? Take a look at this beginners guide to give you the jump start in the garden.

1. Take a Look Around

Take some time to look around your yard and inspect each one of your trees and plants. Keep your eyes open for anything that looks like damage such as insects, beetles, diseases, emerald ash border etc. The key is to take action early and to catch any small problem before it turns into a big one.

2. Fertilize For Fall

It's important to replenish the soil because your plants' and trees' health depends upon it. Your plants soak up vital nutrients from the soil so applying a slow release fertilizer will ensure their longevity in every season.

3. Mulch Your Baby Plants & Trees

Spread a thick layer of mulch around the bases of your plants and trees. This little bit of TLC will really go the extra mile to make sure your young plants and trees will be healthy all winter long. High quality mulch does the trick by keeping nutrient dense organic matter in the soil and helps to prevent weeds and retain soil moisture.

4. Plant New Trees Now

Many people are unaware, but fall is actually the very best time to plant new trees and plants. The temperatures now are cooler than the sizzling summer and this helps new plants grow strong established roots in the cool moist soil.

5. Give Your Plants a Drink of Water

After a hot summer with nothing but sunshine and little rain, your trees and plants are dying for a big drink of water. The best method is the subsurface watering treatment which disperses water throughout the top 12 inches of soil. This is great after a long hot summer and will give your plants maximum hydration without overdoing it.
