Explore the Back Bay
The Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve, also known as the Back Bay, is another great admission-free spot! Hike or bike along the trails and enjoy some scenery while you get your exercise in for the day.
There’s a lot to take in at Balboa Pier! Watch fishermen cast their lines, keep an eye out for sea lions, and enjoy a gorgeous sunset, all for the more than reasonable price of $0. The nearby Newport Beach Boardwalk is also a great place to explore on foot or by bike, with unbelievable waterfront views and plenty of people-watching opportunities. Stop by the Dory Fleet Fish Market at the base of the Newport Beach Pier, or do some window shopping at the many shops nearby!
For a nice change of pace and a slow, relaxed day, stop by the Sherman Library & Gardens. Some events and exhibits do require an entry fee, but the gardens occasionally offer free admission days. Even if you do have to pay admission, it’s only $5. Grab your favorite book and sit and enjoy the tranquility of the gardens!
It does cost money to park here, but you can get into Crystal Cove for free if you walk or bike in! Explore tide pools full of marine life during low tide, or just sit back and enjoy the gorgeous views.
